How it works

An old piece is valued by the pure gold it contains. The calculator converts the net weight (without stones) to 999 equivalent using the BIS grade, values it at the IBJA 999 rate, then applies the deduction the buyer quotes for melting and refining. Deductions are set by the buyer, so ask for them in writing; you can have purity tested at a BIS recognised assaying and hallmarking centre.

Formula

Value = weight x fineness / 999 x IBJA 999 rate per g x (1 - deduction)

Frequently asked questions

How is old gold value calculated?

Pure gold content times the current rate, minus the buyer's deduction.

Why is my old gold worth less than new jewellery?

You receive the metal value less deductions; making charges and GST paid on purchase are not refunded.

How do I check the purity of old gold?

Look for the BIS hallmark or have it tested at a recognised centre (BIS FAQ says testing costs Rs 200 by fire assay).
