How it works

A split divides each share into several smaller ones. The number of shares rises by the ratio and the price falls by the same ratio, so the value of your holding does not change on the split itself. A face value split from Rs 10 to Rs 2 is a 5 for 1 split.

Formula

New shares = shares x new / old; new price = price x old / new

Frequently asked questions

What happens to my shares in a stock split?

You get more shares at a proportionally lower price; the total value is unchanged.

Is a split the same as a bonus issue?

The effect on price is similar, but a bonus capitalises reserves and a split changes the face value.

How do I read a 1:5 split?

Companies state ratios differently; check how many new shares you get for each old share in the notice.
