The Reserve Bank of India has set Rs 14,725 per unit as the premature redemption price for SGB 2019-20 Series V, due on 15 October 2026. Our IBJA 24K benchmark is Rs 1,40,054 per 10 g (PM rate of 30 Oct 2026), which is a different figure. The redemption price is the simple average of IBJA 999 closing prices for 12, 13 and 14 October 2026, as the RBI press release dated 14 October 2026 states.

What the RBI notice sets

The notice applies the scheme terms to one tranche. Under the Government of India notification F.No. 4(7)-B(W&M)/2019 dated 30 September 2019, premature redemption of a Sovereign Gold Bond may be permitted after the fifth year from the date of issue, on a date when interest is payable. Series V was issued on 15 October 2019, so the next premature redemption date is 15 October 2026.

How the Rs 14,725 figure is calculated

The notice gives the price, not the working. We recomputed it from the IBJA PM 999 rows in our own records for the three named days. The notice says only "closing price of gold of 999 purity" as published by IBJA, so we used the PM session rows as the closing benchmark. Our recomputation lands on the notice's figure, but the RBI press release stays the official figure.

The table uses our stored IBJA PM 999 rows for 12, 13 and 14 October 2026. Each figure is a snapshot of that day's benchmark, not a live reading. The per gram line divides the average by ten, because IBJA publishes gold per 10 g.

Who the notice affects

The notice concerns investors who own the SGB 2019-20 Series V tranche and who are eligible for premature redemption on 15 October 2026. It names no other tranche. Investors with a different series or issue date should check their own tranche's terms before using this price.

An investor with 10 units, for example, would multiply 10 by Rs 14,725 to get Rs 1,47,250 before any tax or charges. That is a worked example with round numbers, not a statement of any holding.

What to do with this notice

  1. Check the series and issue date on your SGB record. This notice covers the 2019-20 Series V tranche issued on 15 October 2019.
  2. Confirm that 15 October 2026 is the premature redemption date for your tranche, using the terms that apply to it.
  3. Multiply your units by Rs 14,725 to get the amount the notice sets, before any tax or charges, which the notice does not cover.
  4. Follow the redemption request process your bank or depository participant gives you. The notice does not set out that process.
  5. Keep the RBI press release of 14 October 2026 with your records, since it is the source for the price.

What has not changed

The notice does not change the scheme terms. It applies the existing redemption rule to one tranche, the IBJA 999 closing average of the three business days before redemption. For the live market level, see the gold rate today page. That benchmark is not the redemption price, which uses the three named days. For making charges and GST on a jewellery bill, the gold calculator works from the same IBJA benchmark.

Common mistakes

  • Using the live rate on the gold rate today page in place of the three-day average named in the notice.
  • Applying the Series V price to another tranche. Each tranche has its own issue date and notice.
  • Treating the redemption price as a market price. It is the notice's figure for one date.

Frequently asked questions

What is the premature redemption price for SGB 2019-20 Series V?

The RBI press release dated 14 October 2026 sets Rs 14,725 per unit for premature redemption of the SGB 2019-20 Series V tranche due on 15 October 2026. The price is based on the simple average of the IBJA 999 closing price for 12, 13 and 14 October 2026.

Which gold price does the SGB redemption formula use?

The notice says the redemption price is based on the simple average of the closing price of gold of 999 purity for the three business days before redemption, as published by the India Bullion and Jewellers Association (IBJA). In our recomputation we used the IBJA PM 999 rows as the closing price.

When can an SGB be redeemed early?

The notice says premature redemption may be permitted after the fifth year from the date of issue, on a date when interest is payable. For Series V, the date named in the notice is 15 October 2026. Check the terms of your own tranche for its date.

Does this notice change the SGB scheme?

No. The notice applies the existing scheme terms to one tranche and does not change them. It gives no details for other tranches or new issues, so check rbi.org.in for the current status of any issue.

Is the IBJA benchmark on our site the same as the redemption price?

No. Our gold rate pages show the live IBJA benchmark for a given day. The SGB redemption price uses the average of three named business days, as the RBI notice sets out, so the two figures can differ.
