How it works
Making charges pay for the craft and are not regulated: each jeweller sets them, as a percentage, a rate per gram or a flat amount. Some also add wastage. GST is 3% of the total transaction value of jewellery, whether the making charge is shown separately or not (CBIC Sectoral FAQ on gems and jewellery, Q7).
The effective price per gram shows what you pay for each gram of jewellery, a fair way to compare quotes from different shops.
Formula
Total = (metal value + wastage + making) x 1.03; effective rate = total / weight
