How it works
Profit percent is measured on cost (also called markup), while margin is measured on the selling price. Shops often quote margin, and school textbooks use profit on cost; the calculator shows both so you can compare like with like.
Formula
Profit = (selling price - cost) x quantity; profit % = (SP - CP) / CP x 100; margin = (SP - CP) / SP x 100
Frequently asked questions
How is profit percentage calculated?
Profit divided by cost price, multiplied by 100. A cost of Rs 800 and sale at Rs 1,000 gives 25%.
What is the difference between margin and markup?
Markup is profit as a share of cost; margin is profit as a share of the selling price. The same Rs 200 profit is a 25% markup but a 20% margin.
Does this include GST?
No. Enter prices before or after GST consistently on both sides.
