How it works

The deposit side treats each month's amount as a recurring deposit compounded quarterly at the rate you enter. The SIP side compounds monthly at the return you assume. The comparison is about risk as much as return: the deposit rate is fixed, the SIP outcome is not.

Formula

Deposit: sum of R x (1 + r/4)^(months left / 3); SIP: P x [((1 + i)^n - 1) / i] x (1 + i)

Frequently asked questions

Is a SIP better than an FD?

They carry different risks. A deposit has a fixed rate; a SIP in an equity fund can earn more or less, including losses.

Why compare with a recurring deposit?

Because both put in the same amount every month, which makes the comparison fair.

Is tax included?

No. Deposit interest and fund gains are taxed differently; both figures are before tax.
