How it works
Each monthly instalment earns interest for the months left until maturity, compounded quarterly, which is the convention most banks follow for recurring deposits. The first instalment earns for the full tenure and the last for one month.
Formula
Maturity = sum over each instalment of R x (1 + r/4)^(months left / 3)
- Banks can round interest differently or use other compounding for small tenures, so your passbook may differ by a few rupees.
Frequently asked questions
How is RD maturity calculated?
Every instalment is compounded quarterly for the time it stays in the account, and the results are added up.
Is an RD better than an FD?
They suit different needs: an RD builds savings from monthly income, an FD invests a lump sum. At the same rate an FD earns more because all the money is invested from day one.
Is RD interest taxable?
Yes, as income. The calculator shows pre-tax values.
