Arithmetic at each rate; which rate applies to an item is set by GST notifications.
How it works
GST is a percentage of the taxable value. When the price you have excludes GST, the tax is added on top; when it already includes GST, the tax is the part of the price above the taxable value. Type the rate that applies to your goods or service: rates depend on the item and change by notification, so we do not list them here, except the jewellery rule we have verified.
Formula
Adding: GST = amount x rate / 100; removing: taxable value = price / (1 + rate / 100), GST = price - taxable value
- Jewellery: GST is 3% of the total transaction value, making charge included (CBIC Sectoral FAQ on gems and jewellery, Q7). The gold GST calculator handles it.
Frequently asked questions
How do I add GST to a price?
Multiply the price by the GST rate and divide by 100, then add it to the price.
How do I remove GST from an inclusive price?
Divide the price by (1 + rate/100) to get the taxable value; the rest is GST.
Which GST rate applies to my item?
It depends on the goods or service; check the rate on the invoice or the official GST rate notification.
