Arithmetic at each rate; which rate applies to an item is set by GST notifications.
How it works
Reverse calculation is what you need when a shop quotes an all-in price and you want the taxable value, for example to check an invoice or claim input tax credit. Dividing by (1 + rate) gives the value before tax; simply taking the rate off the inclusive price gives the wrong answer.
Formula
Taxable value = inclusive price / (1 + rate / 100); GST = inclusive price - taxable value
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate GST from a total amount?
Divide the total by (1 + rate/100) to get the base, then subtract the base from the total.
Why is 18% of the inclusive price not the GST?
Because 18% applies to the base value, which is smaller than the inclusive price.
Does this work for any GST rate?
Yes, enter the rate on your invoice.
