How it works

Percent change compares the difference with where you started. It is the standard way to report price moves, salary hikes and growth rates. The calculator also shows the reverse move, because a fall and the recovery from it are not the same percentage.

Formula

Change % = (new - old) / old x 100

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate percentage increase?

Subtract the old value from the new value, divide by the old value and multiply by 100.

Why does a 50% fall need a 100% rise to recover?

After a 50% fall, 100 becomes 50; getting back to 100 means adding 50, which is 100% of the new, lower value.

Can the percentage change be negative?

Yes. A negative result means the value fell.
