The IBJA 24K benchmark was Rs 1,40,054 per 10 g on PM rate of 30 Oct 2026, before GST and making charges. Dhanteras and Diwali fall in October or November in most years, and many families plan gold and silver purchases around them. We have not verified this year's dates here, so check the official festival calendar before you plan a purchase.
The price of a coin or bar is the IBJA rate for its weight, plus the dealer's own premium, plus any tax shown on the bill. This guide explains each part, shows a worked example with labelled assumptions, and gives a checklist for the bill.
What makes up a gold coin price
A coin is priced from three parts. The first is the metal value, which is the IBJA rate for the purity and the coin's weight. The second is the dealer's premium, a charge over the metal value that the dealer sets and that IBJA does not publish. The third is the tax the bill carries. For jewellery the verified rule is that GST is 3 percent of the total transaction value, whether the making charge is shown separately or not, as set out in the CBIC FAQ on gems and jewellery. Check with your dealer how GST is applied to coins and bars, and ask for each line on the bill to be shown separately.
Try it: Gold Price Calculator takes the weight, karat, making charge and GST toggle, and shows the rate per gram, the making charge, GST and the total payable at the IBJA rate. It does not store a dealer premium, so add any premium to the result yourself.
Worked example: a 10 g coin with an assumed premium
The example below uses round assumptions: a metal rate of Rs 1,00,000 per 10 g and a dealer premium of Rs 1,500. Neither is a market quote or a dealer's price, and the calculation shows only how the lines add up.
Coin price arithmetic with labelled assumptions. Not a market quote or a dealer price.
| Step | Working | Value |
|---|---|---|
| Metal value | 10 g at an assumed Rs 1,00,000 per 10 g | Rs 1,00,000 |
| Dealer premium | assumed for this example | Rs 1,500 |
| Subtotal before tax | 1,00,000 + 1,500 | Rs 1,01,500 |
| Tax | depends on the dealer's bill, not calculated here | check the bill |
Example figures, not today's rates.
The same arithmetic works for any weight. Divide the per 10 g rate by 10 to get the per gram rate, multiply by the weight in grams, then add the premium and any tax the dealer applies. When you compare two quotes, write the weight, the rate and the premium for each dealer on the same line, so that the totals are compared like for like.
How the IBJA rate moves the coin price
IBJA publishes AM and PM benchmark rates on working days for gold of 999, 995, 916, 750 and 585 fineness, quoted in rupees per 10 g, and silver of 999 in rupees per kg. It publishes nothing on Saturdays, Sundays or commodity exchange holidays, so a dealer quoting on a weekend may be working from the last published rate. A rate that has not changed over a weekend is not a fall.

Purity and hallmarks to check on the bill
A hallmarked piece carries three marks: the BIS logo, the purity in carat and fineness, and a six digit alphanumeric HUID, which has been in force since 1 July 2021. The verified gold grades are 14K (585), 18K (750), 20K (833), 22K (916), 23K (958) and 24K (995), under IS 1417:2016. Silver grades are 800, 835, 900, 925, 970 and 990, under IS 2112:2014. The HUID can be checked in the BIS Care app. Testing at a BIS assaying and hallmarking centre costs Rs 200 by fire assay, according to the BIS FAQ.
Silver is priced in the same way from the ag999 rate, which the silver price calculator uses. The silver benchmark was Rs 1,81,344 per kg on PM rate of 30 Oct 2026, as an IBJA figure before GST and making.
Festival checklist before you pay
- Write down the weight in grams and the purity stated on the bill before you agree a price.
- Compare the dealer's per gram rate with the IBJA rate for the same purity and date, not with a different session.
- Ask for the dealer premium as a separate line, so it is clear what sits above the metal value.
- Ask for the making charge and GST as separate lines, and check the GST rate applied to each.
- Check that the bill shows the BIS hallmark and HUID for hallmarked pieces, and verify the HUID in the BIS Care app.
- Keep the bill with the weight, purity and rate written on it, for any later exchange or resale enquiry.
For a quick check of silver, the silver price calculator works from the weight, unit, purity, making charge and GST you enter.
Common mistakes
- Treating the dealer premium on a coin as if it were a making charge on jewellery. They are different charges and can be shown differently.
- Forgetting that the IBJA rate is ex GST and ex making, so the bill is higher than the benchmark value.
- Using the 24K rate for an ornament that is 22K, or the other way round.
- Reading the festival dates from a social post instead of the official festival calendar.
- Assuming a rate that appears over a weekend is a new IBJA rate. IBJA publishes nothing on weekends.
For the stored history of gold rates, the gold price history page lists the IBJA figures held in our records since we began recording on 4 June 2026. The 24 carat gold rate page shows the 999 benchmark with its as-of date.
